Ventura County CCW Certification

I am on the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department’s list of approved instructors to conduct CCW Certification classes.  If you are a Ventura County resident who has reached the stage in your certification process that you require your class, you may contact me for current information and availability.

Please ensure before you contact me that you have received your approval email from VCSO and have been instructed to take the class.

Applications filed after January 1, 2024 fall under the new certification rules dictated by the state.  Initial applications require 16 hours and Re-Certifications require 8 hours.  I typically conduct training in 4 hour blocks, though sometimes with prior notice, scheduling can be modified as long as we meet the requirements.

Block 1:  Classroom covering legal and Practical aspects of CCW and concluding with the written test.  The new state mandated Mental Health training will be covered in this block as well.

Block 2 (Required for Initial Certification only): Classroom covering additional considerations such as equipment selection, clothing, training, etc.  This session will differ somewhat depending on the students.  Always, topics / issues relevant to CCW will be covered and dry fire and unloaded (dummy round) required manipulations will be covered. If desired, students can request a section on “field stripping”, cleaning, familiarization of new firearms.  Notify me prior to the class what specific firearm(s) you are interested in.

Blocks 3 and 4 (Block 4 required for Initial Certification only) are range days.  Qualification is required with every pistol you want on your permit.  Remaining time will be spent conducting drills to improve your fundamentals and will be selected and scaled based on each student’s performance and needs.

Half Day Handgun Practice Sessions

We are fortunate right now in the wide availability of quality firearms training.

In classes, it is common to see an increase in your ability to demonstrate a skill in the short term (during and immediately following the class).  If you want the skill to be durable, and you want to be able to perform it consistently on demand or even improve upon it, you need to regularly engage in purposeful practice.

For this reason, I am conducting structured practice sessions.  The focus of these sessions is the ongoing development of handgun fundamentals, independent of the specific intended application.

Prerequisite: A valid CCW permit, law enforcement ID, or some other indication (at my discretion) that you have demonstrated safe gun handling practices.  The first hour of each session will be set aside for those who want to participate that do not have something to show, but possess the requisite skills.  Minimum requirements to participate will be the ability to pass the practical qualification course for the Ventura County CCW certification and to demonstrate safe gun handling habits.

NOTE:  Unsafe behavior / judgement (at my discretion) will result in the person being unable to continue the current practice session, and possibly be excluded from any further training sessions until such time as a re-evaluation establishes that the person has corrected the behavior and is now safe to practice in this environment.

I run these sessions in two ways.

  • Open Sessions and
  • Closed Sessions.

Open sessions can be attended by anyone meeting the prerequisite skill level on a first come, first served basis.

Closed sessions are for training groups that want to attend semi-private practice sessions together and usually on an ongoing basis (month to month), tracking their progress and completing dry-fire practice drills between the live fire sessions.  Closed sessions are only open to those belonging to a specific training group.  If you do not have a group you train with, but are interested in joining a closed group session, I will keep a list of interested persons.  When there are enough to start a new group, I will contact those people on the list to form a new training group.

Contact me for current cost and scheduling availability.
